Meeting Reminder - Aug 23, 2007

August 23rd, 2007 by joshbuhler

Just a quick reminder for tonight’s meeting. Scott Stoddard of SpiritOnin.com will be speaking to us about his game development experience with Flash. This should be a good meeting, so don’t miss it if you’re interested in developing games for Flash.

As usual, we’ll be meeting at 6:00 PM, at the mediaRAIN offices in Orem.

UFlash Meeting - Data Management

July 23rd, 2007 by Rob Taylor

Within the family of Flash CS3, Flex 2/3 and the Flash 9 player, there is an abundant amount of ways to deal with data, both local and remote. Making the right decision as far as what technologies to use can make pinnacle difference in the success of your application. On Thursday’s meeting, we will have an open forum to discuss what options are available and what have proven to work best. This is everybody’s chance to teach and learn. Bring your solutions on how you deal with these different areas:

· Displaying Data (What components do you use or have challenges with?)

· Managing Data (XML, JSON, Array Collections, etc: What have you found works best?)

· Sending and Receiving Remote Data (PHP, ASP, Remoting, etc: What server technology do you use, and in what format do you send it in?)

· Sending and Retrieving Local Data (Shared Objects, Local Connection, External Interface, Zinc, Apollo: What do you use?)

· Alternative AS3 Options (GZip, AMF3, Zip Archives: What are some of the new AS3 formats you have chosen to use to distribute data?)

The meeting will be held this Thursday at the MediaRain office at 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

uFlash Workshop recap

July 12th, 2007 by xtyler

The first uFlash workshop was a great success! Everyone learned a lot, even the main presenters. Matrices were broken down into really simple and easy to understand terms relating to Flash’s 2-dimensional graphics. By the end of the meeting we were rotating and scaling many objects around a dynamic registration point with a single matrix. There has been an overwhelming request for code samples and a free transform class to be made available. For any of the participants last night, if you’re itching to build one or share what you’ve built previously, please post the samples and make them available to the group.

Wonderful job, it was a great workshop. It is a great start for future uFlash workshops. Lets start the topic requests and make some plans for the rest of the year.

I’ve now posted the very limited example we made at the meeting. Download the Matrix Test

uFlash Workshop - The Transform Matrix: Building a Free Transform Tool

July 11th, 2007 by xtyler

There will be a uFlash workshop held today, July 11th. The workshop will be held at the mediaRAIN offices and start promptly at 6pm. This months workshop is focused on matrices in Flash, specifically building up a Free Transform tool similar to the tools the Flash Authoring Environment offer. This type of functionality is very nice to have in online applications that present image editing and layout options to users, such as ScrapBlog and Click-Shirt.

The format of the workshop will be informal and hands-on, so bring your laptops if you can and be ready to contribute and learn from others. Though a laptop will be beneficial, you do not have to have one to attend, and you do not need any prior matrix experience to contribute or learn.

Please come and enjoy the workshop with other uFlash members.

MAX 2007 Registration Now Open

June 22nd, 2007 by joshbuhler

MAX2007 BannerMAX 2007 Registration has now opened! Visit AdobeMAX2007.com for more info and to register. This year is going to be great, especially considering the sessions on AIR & Flex 3. MAX is usually a great event where you’ll be sure to take home loads of great info, and meet some great people.

Also, when you register for MAX, be sure to represent! Tell them that uFlash sent you. On the third page of the registration process at the top of the page there is a box to check that says “Check here if you are a member of a community or user group.” Checking that will pop up another text box that says “Please input your community leader or user group manager’s name” (Josh Buhler).

Doing this serves two purposes: one, it lets Adobe know how many members from our group will be attending. The other is a bit more selfish: if 5 or more members of our group register, I can attend for free. (I tried to change this to being a registration that we can raffle off to the group, but no luck there - sorry.)

Either way, I’ll be attending, so hopefully I’ll see you there!
